I should have known that this was going to be more of a pain in the ass than just dealing with Bebal.

The crowd of demons wasn’t anything we couldn’t handle, but he had been right there, just waiting to be killed. It pissed me off that he slipped away. If that Rakshasi had just waited a few more minutes to show her face, we would have had him.

Her troops would be no problem, but only having two more demon kings to contend with would have helped tremendously. The horde descended on us like a swarm of locusts, everything to my left and right becoming blackened with their dark armor as they swung their swords in our direction. Everyone leapt into action right away, slashing, staking, dodging. I tried to get an eye on Georgia, but the crowd was too thick. She could handle herself, but not being able to see her made me nervous. After seeing her reassemble the weapon like that, her state of mind could have been off. What if she was distracted by whatever had happened with the weapon, and that other girl got a hit in on her?

If anything, I was hoping the telum would increase Georgia’s power, but without being able to keep an eye on her, I couldn’t judge for myself. I kept slashing at the onslaught of demons that dove in on me, driving my stake into as many as I could, constantly trying to push toward Georgia. The others were fine—Eli had his sword, which seemed to be downing demons in one cut, and Olympia and Jose were working together in a sort of tandem attack and defense where Olympia held the monsters off with her shield and Jose went in for the killing blow once she’d knocked them off balance. Jacob, of course, was banishing away. He could apparently only handle one at a time, but he worked his way through the crowd in a blaze of blue and white light. It seemed effective enough. But where was Georgia?

The thought wouldn’t leave my head, and I kept pushing through the crowd.

I knew she couldn’t hear me—no one could over the sound of the battle—but I shouted anyway. “I’m coming, Georgia!”
